EnviroPak Natural Tissue and CompressionPak Join Clean Green Product Line

PPI's ongoing effort to create sustainable products has resulted in two more innovative ways to better protect the environment.

Our new line of EnviroPak Natural Tissue absorbent food pads and CompressionPak efficiency packing offer food processors and grocery retailers two ideal ways to better protect the environment without paying a premium for a green product.

EnviroPak Natural Tissue and CompressionPak both offer a cost-effective, environmentally sustainable solution to food processors, grocery retailers and consumers.

EnviroPak Natural Tissue

EnviroPak Natural Tissue is made from 100% secondary, preconsumed fiber. The pad is completely biodegradable and compostable, and just as safe, sanitary and absorbent as a bleached white tissue pad. The chlorine/bleach-free manufacturing process is less harmful to the environment, and pad production requires less energy, minimizing the product's carbon footprint.

The natural tissue is manufactured using a 380° dryer that effectively kills any potential bacteria. EnviroPak Natural Tissue is approved by the USDA and FDA for food contact.

CompressionPak

CompressionPak is a system that maximizes the efficiency of our case packs. It increases the number of Zap or UltraZap food pads per case upwards of 35 percent - with no change in shipping carton size. The system offers several benefits to our customers:

  • Immediate Cube Savings
  • Administrative Savings
  • Better Box Performance
  • Significant Source Reduction

New UltraZapXtendaPak Improves Food Safety, Reduces Shrink and Markdowns

Breakthrough Technology Minimizes Microbiological Growth in Store-Packed Meat and Poultry Products
Food safety and freshness are top priorities in retail grocery meat departments. Every effort is made throughout the supply chain to maintain the freshness, quality and safety of store-packed meat and poultry products. Despite these efforts, retailers are often required to discount products that are nearing their sell-by date in order to motivate consumers. Unsold packages are ultimately pulled from the display cases. These practices are costing the grocery industry millions of dollars every year.

To help grocers maintain the safety, appearance, and marketability of store-packed meat and poultry, Paper Pak Industries is introducing UltraZapXtendaPak, a revolutionary active absorbent food pad. Developed by a team of food industry and packaging experts, UltraZapXtendaPak maintains the food product's organoleptic features - smell, color and texture - through a technologically advanced, proprietary system.

UltraZapXtendaPak minimizes the bacterial growth in store-packaged meat and poultry through a patented process. Additives in the pad produce carbon dioxide (CO2), an inert gas known to have bacteriostatic properties. Moisture from the store-packed meat and poultry is absorbed by the UltraZapXtendaPak cellulose pad, which then produces a steady stream of CO2 gas inside the package. The carbon dioxide gas wraps itself around the meat, creating an envelope that helps retard the growth of spoilage bacteria present on the surface of the meat.

A second anti-bacterial ingredient integrated in the UltraZapXtendaPak pad reduces the bacterial growth inside the cellulose pad and in the purge. A reduction of bacterial growth slows the natural decay process of packaged meat and poultry, allowing the product to maintain better color, smell and feel on the second, third, and fourth day.

According to Dr. Aaron L. Brody, President and CEO of Packaging/Brody, Inc., UltraZapXtendaPak offers tremendous benefits to the meat and poultry industry. "UltraZapXtendaPak has innovatively applied modern principles of active packaging to generate synergistic natural antimicrobial effects in pads that constitute an integral component of in-store packages to help retard adverse microbiological changes in fresh meat or poultry. By incorporating the natural preservative effects of carbon dioxide into packaging, Paper Pak Industries is offering a remarkable breakthrough in fresh meat and poultry packaging for supermarket operators."

UltraZapXtendaPak offers a number of features preferred by the leading grocery retailers, including a variety of colors, a variety of absorbency levels and a new and improved, highly opaque film that masks the purge absorbed inside the pad. All of the active ingredients and additives in the pad comply with the U.S. government's food packaging safety standards.

UltraZapXtendaPak is an example of Paper Pak Industries' on-going commitment to provide the food industry with the most technologically advanced absorbent products. "The XtendaPak product is the first in a series of products that will help both food retailers and food processors extend shelf life and improve food safety. Individual products will be tailored to specific applications thereby allowing the highest level of efficacy when compared to customer goals," explained Ron Jensen, CEO and President, Paper Pak Industries.

UltraZapRoasterPak Improves the Shelf Appeal and Safety Of Rotisserie Chickens

The Retail Rotisserie Market Continues To Heat Up
Consumers, confronted with less free time to prepare traditional in-home meals, continue to turn to retail grocers to provide convenient and flavorful meal solutions. As a result, sales of rotisserie chickens in supermarkets and membership stores continue to soar.

According to the National Chicken Council, rotisserie chicken sales have grown between five and 10 percent annually over the last ten years, or double the rate of the overall chicken market. An estimated 750 million rotisserie birds will be purchased by consumers this year.

Make A Good Thing Better
Unfortunately, the same warm, flavorful juice that consumers desire in rotisserie chicken can also create real problems for retailers and consumers alike. Excess juice in store-packed rotisserie products can leak onto retail displays, floors, grocery carts, checkout aisles, car seats, refrigerators and kitchen counters, thus creating unnecessary safety, health, and consumer satisfaction issues.

Paper Pak Industries now offers retailers an ideal way to improve the safety and appearance of rotisserie poultry and meat products.

Introducing UltraZapRoasterPak, an absorbent food pad designed to trap the free-flowing juices found in packages of rotisserie chickens.

UltraZapRoasterPak food pads offer several important features and benefits:

  • Improves the shelf appeal of rotisserie chickens and reduces the danger and inconvenience of leaking packages
  • Polymer based top and bottom layers plus a highly absorbent, strong cellulose core lock in moisture
  • Sealed sides eliminate any tearing or separating, even under pressure
  • Subtle, black UltraZapRoasterPak food pad is microwavable

EnviroPak -- A Clean Green Product From Paper Pak Industries

Preserving The Environment One Package At A Time
Introducing Zap® and UltraZap® EnviroPak, a range of new biodegradable products that are designed to improve the natural disposal of absorbent cellulose food pads.

Paper Pak Industries, a leading manufacturer of absorbent mediums for the food packaging industry, now offers food marketers a sensible, environmentally responsible solution to consumer disposal of absorbent food pads.

Solid Waste Management Challenges The Food Industry
Solid waste management, and the disposal of plastics in particular, is a growing concern to communities around the world. The typical amount of solid waste generation has nearly tripled in many industrial nations since 1960 while plastics generation in the municipal solid waste stream has increased from less than 1 percent in 1960 to over 11 percent in 2001.

As consumers generate higher amounts of waste, industry is developing new approaches to lessen the impact of solid waste on the environment. Technological advances enable manufacturers to enhance existing products with environmentally friendly features.

Quality Cellulose Food Pads That Provide Superior Performance In an Environmentally Friendly Format
The new line of Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent cellulose food pads feature a polyethylene backing that will degrade (as per ASTM D3826) and biodegrade (as per ASTM D5988) in most municipal solid waste systems. The degradation is triggered by heat and UV light and is enhanced by mechanical stress and moisture.

The enhanced polyethylene in Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent food pads complies with FDA (USA) and SCF (Europe) applicable food packaging regulations. When combined with our highly absorbent, FDA approved cellulose core, Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent food pads lock in moisture during the selling cycle and respond accordingly during the biodegradation process.

Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent cellulose food pads offer food marketers the advantages of trapping free-flowing natural juices in consumer preferred packages while preserving the environment during the disposal process.

The comprehensive line of Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent food pads is available in a variety of styles, sizes, colors, shapes and absorbencies for specific products and package sizes.

UltraZapDisplayPak Improves the Shelf Appeal of Shingled Packages

Improve Consumer Appeal and Takeaway
The retail merchandising practice of displaying packages of meat, poultry and seafood products in a shingled, or angled, format can lead to poor consumer takeaway.

The packaged protein often slumps to the bottom of the angled tray, which results in consumers responding negatively to the quality of the product.

Paper Pak Industries has developed UltraZap® DisplayPak, an innovative absorbent food pad that enables retailers to improve the shelf appeal of shingled packages in the meat department.

UltraZap DisplayPak features a proprietary polyethylene backing that improves the merchandising of case-ready meat, poultry and seafood products.

UltraZap DisplayPak helps the meat adhere to the package when displayed at an angle, rather than slipping to the bottom of the meat tray.
